Commissioner James J. Martinez, Dist. I

James J. Martínez begins his first term as County Commissioner in January 2019. 

Commissioner Martínez was born in the beautiful Espanola Valley.   His parents are Jimmy S. and Theresa Martinez, both from Chimayo.  Commissioner Martinez was raised in Chimayo, NM with two sisters, Melissa and Cristal and brother Joshua.   

Commissioner Martinez continues to reside in Chimayo, with his beautiful wife, Consuelo and daughters, Kayla Hope, Aleah Faith and Julia Love.   

Commissioner Martínez attended Chimayo Elementary School, Espanola Junior High School and graduated, with honors, from Espanola Valley High School in 1994.  He received an academic scholarship to the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where he graduated, with honors, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences in 1999 and then graduated with a Master of Arts Degree, with a concentration in Speech-Language Pathology in 2001. 

Upon graduation, Commissioner Martinez and his family moved back to Chimayo where he accepted a full-time position with the Espanola Public Schools as a School-based Speech and Language Therapist.  Currently, he continues to provide services to the Espanola Public Schools, on an independent contractor basis.  In 2003, Commissioner Martinez began his own small business, providing Therapy services to individuals with developmental disabilities. 

In 2005, Commissioner Martinez was ordained as Associate Pastor at the Rock Christian Fellowship Church, Espanola, NM, where he continues to serve on a volunteer basis.   As Pastor, Commissioner Martinez directs a local Bible College Extension campus, teaches Bible Studies, volunteers in their church food ministry, etc.   

Commissioner Martinez graduated with his Associates in Biblical Studies degree from Christian Leadership University, he graduated with his Bachelor of Theology Degree from Vision International University and is currently working on his Master of Theology Degree from Vision International University. 

Commissioner Martinez serves on various Boards and Foundations.  He has coached basketball for EVCA and the Rock Christian Academy.  Commissioner Martinez continues to volunteer in various community activities and functions.
